Oh France, how lovely your fashion is! When you think of
French fashions, what are the first thoughts that come to your mind? Usually
something minimalistic yet electrifyingly sophisticated. If fashion is an art
form, we’d gladly consider the French grand masters of the canvas (as they have
been for centuries now); but what’s that? You want the modern touch? Well, grab
your passports and we’ll show you how to dress French from your tete to your pieds!
- Do not complicate!
- Life is complicated as it is. Work is complicated. School is complicated. Relationships are complicated. If there’s one thing the French do well, it’s their simplistic style. Simplistic does not mean you’ve sacrificed sophistication, Heavens no! The French have this down to a T! Keep your accessories light and let the sleek bareness of your mystere be your allure. A famous quote by CoCo Chanel: "Before you leave the house, take a look in the mirror and take one thing off." But you feel your outfit is complete? You wanted to dress like a Frenchman/woman, didn’t you?
- The Black Suit and Wide Brim Hat
- A classic look made legendary and iconic by Yves St. Laurent in the 60s. No French fashionista/o has this piece missing in their wardrobe, and if they do, it’s not for very long!
- Flats: Function AND Form
- Can you imagine traversing the historic cobblestone street of France in sky-high heels? Yes, our ankles hurt thinking about that too! Opt for flats or a nice pair of boots or wedges. Beware the stilettos, you daredevils! Fellas, your boots and oxfords are a must!
- Think Silhouettes!
- Let’s face it, American fashion seems to be perfectly fine with rumpled cloth and rough edges. Take a look at the French, sleek and flattering silhouettes. Not sure about your silhouette? Look at the edges of your body in the mirror. Do you resemble a sack of potatoes of a sleek new sportscar? Va Va Vroom!
- If you're going to wear fur (hopefully faux!)
- Make it your focus. Don’t pair it with noisy ripped denim or obnoxiously bright/patterned leggings or shoes. Let It be your statement! Men, don’t be afraid to wear furs (faux!), too! They’re big on the Fall runways this season.
- Leave it to the imagination, ladies
- What’s missing from French outfits and fashions that we see everyday in American? That’s right, ‘the girls’. Keep them covered. Afterall, ‘mystery’ and ‘fallure’ are French specialties. Don’t throw everything out there.
