What I Wore: Lecture Hopping

Hello there, Youvies!

Today is another outfit breakdown! Let's get started!

Here's what I wore:

I've really been into wearing denim jackets these days when I'm spending my day on campus. What I love about them is that they keep my look casual while still adding a little something different from the other students on campus. And there's just something so classic about a denim jacket that you can almost never go wrong. I added a pocket square just to add a little more visual intrigue to a more simple outfit.

Black is one of my favorite colors to wear, so today I thought I would try wearing simple black chinos from Cotton On and a black t-shirt from Forever 21. What I liked about this outfit it that I didn't feel too complicated, but still felt great! And for a day of lecture hopping, that's all right with me!

Underneath all the black though, I decided to rock my pink socks for a little surprise pop of color. These are definitely my favorite socks for the primary reason that no one really expects it! In a sea of black, grey, and white no shows, my pink socks help me stand out and add some flavor! For me, it's a fun way to add a little color and a little personality to my outfits.

Trend Watch: Sheer for Fall

Hello again, Youvies!

Today we're going to take a look at sheer looks for fall. We know this may seem a bit silly (we thought so), but we're going to show you how to wear this trend in the cooler climates! Let's get started!

The sheer look has been around for quite a while, but more recently it has become a more mainstream look that all the fashionistas are donning!

The key to nailing this trend is confidence!

Some quick tips:

  • Don't show too much. Wearing sheer or mesh clothing can very easily look, well, trashy. Be selective with how much skin you allow to show underneath all that sheer.
  • Keep the rest of your pieces fairly simple. Depending on how much sheer is on the garment, you may need to wear more simple pieces that don't take away from the sheer. Less is more when styling sheer garments.
  • Own it! You all got this one down by now, right? Yeah you do! If you're self conscious about wearing a sheer garment it'll definitely show, so start small until you feel comfortable.

Surprise! This look is not just for the ladies! The same rules applied to the ladies still apply for the gentleman, but...

  • For the gentlemen, just like the ladies, this look can go really classless really quickly. We suggest getting a little creative with what you pair underneath and opt for a more dressed up shirt like the model in the collage below. This will give your look a very trendy and more edgy feel.

Strut Song: Taylor Swift "Shake It Off"

Happy Tuesday, Youvies!

Lately, life here at Team DeJa You has been a little hectic so we decided to take a little time to refocus our energy so we can get back to struting it out with you, our fantastic readers! But enough of this mushy stuff! We're back this week with a new strut song! Now, only half of Team DeJa (The De) are a fan of this next strut songstress, but the song we feel has an important message layed over one sick beat. See what we did there? Yeah you did. Enough chatter! It's "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift!

Here's our (Derrick's) favorite lyric:

"But I keep cruising
Can't stop won't stop moving
It's like I got this music in my mind
saying it's gonna be alright"

Check out the video below:

What we like about this song is the message; keep loving yourself no matter what regardless of what everyone else is saying. And we think that's a perfect way to go through life.

So what did you think, Youvies? Is there a song that helps you conquer your day? Let us know and we just might use it!

Until next time,

What I Wore: Monday Casual

Ello Youvies!

Today I will break down one of the looks I recently wore to school I so appropriately named "Monday Casual". Let's get started!

Typically Monday's are busy days for me, and this Monday was no exception, so I usually go for a look that's dressed down, but still put together. And since it's also still 80 plus degrees here in Southern California, I needed something that would keep me cool while I race around campus all day. Here's what I wore:

Short sleeved collard shirts are possibly my favorite pieces to wear to school. They're versatile, comfortable, and allow me to stand out a little bit from the sea of t-shirts, tank tops, and university hoodies. This shirt I'm wearing I got from Cotton On at an outlet mall for only $15, so it's good looking, functional, and inexpensive, which are 3 of my favorite things!

The jeans are old Levi's I've had since high school and I've recently pulled them to the front of my closet and I absolutely love them! They're comfortable and worn in so they're easy to get around in and sit through countless hours of lectures.

The shoes are from New Balance and they are perhaps one of the fewer items that I've splurged on. Probably like most of you, I do a lot of walking during the day and needed a good pair of shoes that have both form and function and these New Balance definitely have both. My grandma always told me that you're feet have to hold you up so you might as well invest in something that can do the job. So with all that considered the $80 price tag was worth it. Good call, Grandma.

Strut Song: Disclosure "Latch" ft. Sam Smith

Happy Tuesday, Youvies!

We hoped you enjoyed the sass we brought you the past two weeks. This week we're bringing you a song that's just fun! Sure being sassy is great, but every now and again you just gotta dance, forget you're in public, jump on a table and sing at the top of your lungs! Not that we have any personal experience or anything... Anyway, this week's Strut Song is "Latch" by Disclosure featuring Sam Smith!

Here's our favorite lyric:
"Now I’ve got you in my space
I won’t let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I’m latching on to you"

The chorus is just so great we couldn't resist! Check out the video below!

Ayudame! Help me DeJa You!

Ello Youvies!

Today's question comes from one of our lovely, dedicated readers Dominique! Recently, Demi Lovato was photographed wearing a stunning gown by Elie Saab that retails at a wopping $11,000! We know right?! That's a new car! Or about 2 quarters at university (but that's a whole other discussion). Dominique wants to know how to get the look without the insane price tag. Well Youvie, you've come to the right place! Let's get started!

Here's the inspiration:

In general, quality sequins are expensive. It is true that you can find sequin pieces at places like Forever 21, but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, so, be wary when purchasing sequin pieces that are really inexpensive as the first time you rock it could be the last. If this look is something that you think you can really get into and wear on more than one occasion, we suggest buying something that's a little more expensive. Check out some options below!

All of the pieces in this first set are in between $50 and $100.

For the fellas:
This look isn't just for the ladies! But if rocking a sequin dress isn't exactly your thing, here are some looks you can rock at your next party. The whole idea is to try something new, whether it be a printed shirt or a crazy shoe.

When drawing inspiration from a celebrity, get creative! If sequins are a bit too far out of your comfort zone, try another aspect of the look that your comfortable with like the silhouette or the color. Also, add your own unique style to it to make the look 100% you!

What did you think, Youvies? Is there a style you've seen on a celebrity you'd like us to break down? Let us know in the comments! Show us how you rock this style for a chance to be featured! We hoped this helped Dominique! Thanks for reading!

Strut Song: Kelly Rowland- "I'm Dat Chick"

Happy Tuesday, Youvies!

We're back with another strut song and we're keeping the sassy theme going! This week's strut song is "I'm Dat Chick" by one of our favorite artists Kelly Rowland! You gotta love all things Kelly; she's sassy and just drop dead gorgeous, but aside from her physical attributes and success she has had to overcome quite a bit. In her song "Dirty Laundry" she revealed that she was in an abusive relationship for several years until she found the strength in herself to leave. Kelly Rowland is our Strut Songtress this week not only for her sass and outer beauty, but for her inner beauty, confidence and the work she had to put in to find them for herself.

Check out an interview she gave with Wendy Williams about the abuse:

Back to the music! Here's our favorite lyric:

"And I'm not cocky I just love myself
He can't buy a ring I can't buy myself
I'm puttin' on a show so you can check me out
This chick know she cute so what you talkin' 'bout"

Check out the song below:
