Getting the Bang For Your Buck

Hello again, Youvies!

Today we're going to talk about how to get the most bang for your buck out of your wardrobe. If you're anything like us, you don't have the resources to constantly be renewing your wardrobe. That means that the pieces we purchase have to last for a while.

This post is all about how to wear one piece for multiple occasions in multiple outfits and we're starting with leather jackets! Let's get started!

A couple quick tips for everyone:

  •  Invest in quality. Buying a more quality piece will help ensure longevity, which will keep you looking good for more than a couple months. We're not saying go out there and drop $300 on a new leather jacket, but to weigh the cost with how much use you'll get out of the garment.
  • Keep it simple. Don't get too crazy with interesting patterns and textures. The goal is to get pieces that you can wear with multiple outfits so stick to solid, neutral colors.
  • Stray from trends. Stick with pieces that are more timeless than trendy. Sure that mesh jacket might be cool now, but will you be into it in a years time? Probably not. Opt for pieces that will withstand time and trends.

Strut Song: Kiesza- "No Enemiesz"

Happy Tuesday, Youvies!

Today we're bringing you a new artist that we're pretty obsessed with. Kiesza first caught our attention with her music video to her song "Giant In My Heart", which completely demonstrates her compassion and love for everyone. Haven't seen it? Watch it here

Since at DeJa You we're all about loving and accepting everyone as they are, we felt that "No Enemiesz" would be the perfect Strut Song! It doesn't hurt that it's great to dance to and has a fun video!

Here's our favorite lyric:
"If we could all fall in love together
If we could all fall in love together
If we could all fall in love together
We'd have no enemies
We'd have no enemies"

We couldn't have said it any better. Check out the video below!

What did you think, Youvies? Is there a song that helps you conquer your day? Let us know in the comments and we just might use it!

What I Wore: Mellow Yellow

Good day, Youvies!

Every once in a while I get the urge to try something really out of my comfort zone and this was definitely one of those days. Let's get started!

Here's what I wore:

My favorite part about wearing this outfit was definitely how I felt in it. I felt just a little bit cooler than the average college student and enjoyed getting to explore my personal style! That's what it's all about right?

My hat I actually purchased on vacation at some random store we passed by. Now, normally the things you buy on vacation should just stay on vacation, but this was one of those purchases that happened to be a good buy despite my cloudy, relaxed, on-vacation judgment.

I got my shirt from Cotton On for only $15 at an outlet mall and it's definitely one of my favorites. It's soft, really comfortable, and just as easy to wear as a t-shirt. Living in SoCal is like living in perpetual summer so I always need pieces that keep me cool in the California sun and this shirt fits the bill.

The yellow pants of which this outfit was inspired I've actually had in my closet for a couple years. I got them from J. Crew (again, from an outlet mall) and took advantage of that student discount! At least spending the majority of your days in lectures has some benefits! If my memory serves me well, I believe that these pants were around $30, which considering the brand, is pretty darn good.

My shoes are from Aldo and surprisingly were only sale for only $40! And again, I got these from the same outlet mall. Don't judge. I like outlet malls ok. What I love about these shoes is that the outer shell is denim, which gives them a cool, edgy twist.

Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover

Hello again, dear Youvies!

“Don’t judge a book by its cover”

It’s a saying we’ve heard over and over again since the start of our lives, and yet, it’s one of the hardest to follow.

Why?

Well, the simple explanation is that we are visual creatures. Before we can get to know anyone or anything, we make judgments based upon what we initially see.
Do they appear attractive? Do they appear smart? Do they appear fun? As much as we try to deny the fact, most of us pre-judge others based upon what we see.
So is the case of photographer Haley Morris-Calfiero.

Ms. Morris-Calfiero photographed herself in situations anyone would find themselves in, but the subject in the photos was not herself….it was the people around her. Or more, accurately, the looks she received from the people around her.

It is hard to pinpoint what the exact thoughts of these people are, but it is clearly negative. However, we are not here to fault them. They are reacting upon basic human instinct to judge upon appearance. Understandable? Yes. Acceptable? Well, we’ll let you look at the images yourself and let you decide.

Tell us your thoughts!

Strut Song: Beyonce-"7/11"

Happy Strut Song Tuesday, Youvies!

With the sudden release of Beyonce's new video, we of course had to check it out, and we couldn't be more excited! It's always a good time for Beyonce, but there's something special about this video that we just can't resist.

For the most part, Beyonce has presented herself in a way that's so unattainable to most of society that we sometimes forget she's not a fierce dancing, singing, programmable mutant robot from space, but just a human. Just Beyonce. This video is not only entertaining, but it reminds us that we're all humans. Silly, funny, quirky humans.

Sometimes we just get so wrapped up in the perfection of our favorite celebrities that we forget they're just like us. Just because society places them on a pedestal doesn't mean they belong there. There's not one single person out there who's better than anyone else, and we here at DeJa You challenge you to join us in changing the idea that anybody is better than anybody else. Just like Beyonce, you're silly, funny, quirky, talented, and most of all, human.

Ok ok enough of that! Here's our favorite lyric:

"Girl I'm tryna kick it with you

Girl I'm tryna kick it with you
Man I'm tryna kick it with you
My feet up, I kick it with you
Man I swear I kick it with you
Man I swear I kick it with you
Girl I wanna kick it with you
Man I know I kick it with you
Yeah I spin' around and I kick it with you"

Strut Song: M.I.A- "Paper Planes"

Happy Tuesday, Youvies!

Today we're taking a trip back to the early 2000s with M.I.A's Paper Planes! Who doesn't love this song, right? You have to admit you feel a little bit cooler when you listen to M.I.A, especially Paper Planes! Soak it in, Youvies.

Here's our favorite lyric:

"No one on the corner has swagger like us

Hit me on my Burner prepaid wireless
We pack and deliver like UPS trucks
Already going hell just pumping that gas"

Meredith O'Connor

Hello Youvies!

Today we're going to take a look at the style of Meredith O'Connor! Meredith is a talented young artist with a positive anti-bullying message that encourages young men and women to love themselves just as they are. We couldn't think of a better message for a young woman to get behind! So kudos to you, Meredith for inspiring so many young people!

Check out her video for her song "Just The Thing" which is all about loving yourself even if you don't fit in.

But we're fashion people here, right? And we wanted to know a little bit about the fashionista behind the activist. We got the opportunity to ask Meredith a few general questions about her personal style:

DJ: "How would you describe your style?"

M: "My style is very loud, I love bold colors that are simple, but dramatic. I also love bright warm colors that are feminine and fun."

DJ: "Where do you like to shop?"

M:  "Forever 21 mainly."

DJ: "What is your favorite article of clothing to wear?"

M: "My favorite piece is my Faviana Red dress that I wear on tour during my concerts."

DJ: "What does style mean to you?"

M: "Style is a form of expression and to me it is whatever you feel comfortable in. I look for styles that emulate how I feel at times in my life."

There are three words that we feel sum up Meredith's style: colorful, feminine, and modern. Here's how you can incorporate these things into your style if you're feeling inspired.

  • Colorful. Meredith loves color as she expressed to us in her answers, but the key to nailing this is picking one color as the focus of your outfit and letting the rest of the pieces accent it.
  • Feminine. Meredith's style has a definite feminine edge, which we love. The key to nailing this is, well, owning it. If you're typically a more rough and tough kind of girl, it'll show. When wearing feminine pieces, it's success has a lot to do with attitude. However, if you'd like to incorporate a little more femininity into your look, try pairing them with more tough pieces like combat boot, leather jackets, or denim to give you more of an edge.
  • Modern. Forever 21 is a good place to give your look a modern update. They key to nailing this is keeping up on the latest trends and styles (by checking out your friends at DeJa You of course) to give your look a modern flair.
Check out our Meredith inspired looks and get the look yourself!

Fall Skin Care

Hello, Youvies!

With the change in the weather, comes a change in skincare! There’s no denying that our skin takes quite the hit when it comes to the change in seasons. Don’t fret! We’ve gathered a myriad of ways to help your skin retain its glow! Let's get started!

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!
Nobody likes dry skin. Not you, not your mother, not your significant other, not your dog, not your cat, nobody! So, to keep everyone happy, remember to keep your skin hydrated; preferably on a daily basis. The best time to apply your lotion or crème (which is preferred during this time of year) is right after you’ve dried off from your shower or bath. Your skin is open and ‘absorbent’ enough at this time to retain even more moisture than if you were to do this hours after your shower or bath. This is a method Jazzi swears by!

Crème de la Crème
Switch from lotion to cream. As the season’s air becomes drier, your skin needs a thicker moisturizer. During this time of year, crème is preferred, but lotions certainly don’t hurt. This can probably be left up to preference.

Don't Forget Sunscreen!
Summer has come and gone, so you can skimp out on the sunscreen, right? No. Ohhhh no. Sunscreen is a daily essential that can save you from weather-induced premature wrinkling of the skin…or worse.
Use a moisturizer with a minimum SPF of 15 and reapply with a facial sunscreen throughout the day as needed. For you those with sensitive facial skin (either irritation or breakouts) there is sunscreen made just for you! Just know your skin and look around. Most can be found in your Walgreens or CVS

Feet need Love Too!
Probably the least paid-attention to during these cooler months are your feet. They’re subjected to nothing but full-covered boots, shoes and thick socks all season long. Don’t forget to exfoliate and take care of these. Especially, since they’re so supportive of you (see what we did there?)
◦Protect your lips. Start moisturizing now to prevent dry, cracked lips this winter. Use a non-petroleum based lip balm for best results.

Cuticle Oil
You know the scenario all too well. You’re strolling along, minding your own business when suddenly your finger skin decides to peel like a banana and snag on any and every thing you come across. Sucks, doesn’t it? Well, there’s a remedy for that too! That terrible split occurs simply because your skin is dried out (you didn’t have that problem during summer did you? Nope!). There is cuticle oil that can also be found in your local drugstore. However, the lotion/crème out of the shower trick works just as well!

There you go Youvies! Here are your tips to protect and maintain your beautiful skin through these chillier months!

Date Night With DeJa

Hello Youvies!

Today we're going to talk about what to wear on a date! Let's get started!

When going on a date it is important to keep in mind where the venue is. Whether it be a picnic, carnival, movie, show, or dinner, be sure that your outfit matches the location!

For the ladies:

  • Keep it classy. Maintain your sex appeal without showing off all the goods. Of course we don't mean full sleeves and a turtle neck, but you get it right? Of course you do!
  • Where something that represents you. Style is just another way to let people know who you are without having to say anything so use that to your advantage! Add your personality into the look.
  • Don't overdue it. This includes makeup. remember they want to get to know more about you, not your outfit. Keep it simple.
  • Confidence. Nothing will make you or your outfit shine brighter.
Check out Michelle Phan's video "Casual Date Night Look" below for some inspiration:

Here's some of our inspiration:

For the gentlemen:
  • Grooming. Your date will certainly appreciate a well groomed man. There's nothing hotter right? We think so anyway.
  • Keep it clean. Leave your ripped jeans and Converse at home for the evening and opt for pieces that are a bit more polished like chinos, dark washed straight or slim fit jeans, polos, button ups, and oxfords.
  • Have fun with it! Just because you're going on a date doesn't mean you have to completely give up your fun side! Whether it be a colorful pocket square or your favorite frames, pick something that represents your personality.
  • Make sure everything fits. This will keep your look clean, polished, and make you look more put together.
  • Confidence. Knock your date dead with that dazzling personality of yours!

There's this rule that almost every man knows to not wear jeans on a first date, but we here at DeJa You are going to challenge that. Here are some tips for keeping it casual, but still appropriate for a date.
  • Opt for dark washed, straight leg or slim fit jeans
  • No rips, holes, or fading
  • Make sure they fit both around the waist and in length.

Check out these videos from our favorite gents, Blake and George, doing the First Date Tag on their YouTube channel Gents Lounge:

Strut Song- Fergie "L.A. Love" and "Labels or Love"

Welcome back Youvies!

Happy Strut Song Tuesday! This week we just couldn't decide on one Strut Song, but we both agreed on one thing- Fergie. We love us some Fergie Ferg at DeJa You and today we're bringing you two songs from the sassy songstress: "L.A. Love" and "Labels or Love".

Here's our favorite lyric from "Labels or Love":

"Love is like a runway but which one do I love more?
No emotional baggage
Just big bags filled with Dior
Love's like a runway, so what's all the fussing for?
Let's stop chasing them boys and shop some"

Check out the song below!

Here's our favorite lyric from "L.A. Love":

"Uh
 Tell em where I'm at
From the plaques to the uh uh
Everything fat
Got Mustard on a track
My girls all stacked
When I roll down the window, let me know where you're
Atlanta North South Cac-ill-lac
Texas grill Cadillacs through Miami then back
To London, Jamaica then France
The whole damn world took effect to Ferg tell 'em"
